Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia. Catalonia has its own language, flag, and government. On Sundays and holidays, the Sardana, the Catalan dance of freedom, is danced, among other places, in front of the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia and in Placa de Catalunya. You can also just stroll around the city, along La Rambla, where there is always something going on. Right by La Rambla is also the large, bustling food market. Walk along the promenade or through the small alleys and wide boulevards. Eat tapas and drink a glass of wine. Sit on Placa de Catalunya and watch life - children playing football - or listen to the music. On Passeig de Gracia - one of the main boulevards - there are many fashionable shops, galleries, and luxury hotels.

The soul of Barcelona is best found on La Rambla - the city's lifeline with street artists, small shops, flower stalls, and a flea market with everything from aquarium fish to antiques. La Rambla stretches from the large square Plaça de Catalunya and divides the old town into two parts. The area is an outstanding collection of medieval buildings nestled at the foot of the cathedral. The district appears as a mountain of solid stone palaces pierced by narrow, labyrinthine streets. The facades in the densely populated Barri Gòtic are adorned with oversized wrought-iron lanterns and balconies, where laundry flutters in the breeze, and canaries chirp from small cages.

Barri Gòtic is one of Europe's largest and best-preserved medieval neighborhoods. When you embark on an adventure in Barri Gòtic in Barcelona, part of the charm is letting yourself be lured through the captivating, narrow streets to suddenly land on a beautiful square, from which you continue the adventure into new alleys with fashion shops, trendy cafes, tapas bars, or small gold mines of restaurants.
